Video Games, like any other medium such as Literature, Filme and Music. Have many kinds of Genre unique to that said medium. With video games, there are genres that it shares with other mediums, such as Horror. Though it has many that are unique to the medium as they can make the experience unique and different. It can enhance the story it tells, make us feel and experience different emotions and scenarios. Genres such as Action Adventure games can give bombastic and sprawling epics with enriched worlds and adventures the player can embark. Whether it's exploring a futuristic wasteland, ancient ruins or medieval world. Role-playing and First person games can help the user project themselves onto the character, help leave their mark on the game and experience the game and story unfold like they are there.

In this literature review, the goal is for us to talk about these genres, their rising popularity and their evolution and impact they have in the medium of video games.

Marek Bronstring, the staff of Gameranx and Tristan Donovan have all talked about adventure games and go into detail about the genre, what it has to offer and the many examples of games that are a part of the said genre. The articles they have created delves into Action/Adventure games, it cites many games and talks about how they play, what unique mechanics they offer and how it creates a unique experience for players and to aid the story. The authors give great detail in their articles and what these games do and even show that some games can have unique ideas and stories and approach the genre differently, either linear or open world.

Kosta Andreadis (2015) hones in on a more specific topic when discussing Action/Adventure games. The author discusses the Past, Present and Future of the genre, while other articles that talk about Action Adventure games, seem to briefly discuss this area. The author writes about this topic in detail, discussing the genres humble beginnings with text-based adventure games. To how they evolved into games such as Monkey Island from LucasArts and to the modern entries with improved graphics, mechanics and how many games in the genre can differ greatly in how linear or open they are and how choices affect the stories in certain modern adventure games.

Krista Bonello Rutter Giappone (2015) also hones in on a specific topic in adventure games. The author talks about the humour in the genre and how rather unique it is, especially in the medium of video games. It discusses the fact the humour in adventure games can be rather self-aware and how the humour can reflect on current trends, comment on situations in the game and even to the point where it can be self-deprecating too, citing examples like LucasArts Monkey Island. The author goes into great detail in a certain subject and gives a great insight into such a weird and unique aspect in this genre of games.

Edwin Evans-ThirlwellMichael HitchensMaria Konnikova all discuss the genre of First Person games in each of their respected articles and the fact how popular this genre is with modern games and how many players have gelled with the genre and the undying popularity of this genre. Edwin Evans-Thirlwell talks about the history of the First person shooters, how they began to how they have evolved and how the mechanics have changed, showing that the genre has improved and giving us the insight into the genres evolution. Michael Hitchens talks about how the genre overall, the main goal is to explain what it is and citing 566 examples, comparing them starting with one of the first FPS games like Wolfenstein and how the genre has evolved. Maria Konnikova discusses a more specific topic, the author brings up the fact that many players seem to really enjoy FPS games and the fact its a popular genre with high sales amongst many titles. The article discusses the fact that players can be immersed in the games, how they feel in control and that they connect with the avatar they control and feel like they are witnessing the events unfold in the game.

The Staff of VG24/7 (2018) has created an article thats more straightforward and surface level but still interesting. The article is a list of the 50 best FPS games created in the genre. The article shows many readers their subjective list and some of the best-regarded games in the FPS genre and what they have to offer. The article cites many games, as it should and what these games do so well and what they bring to the table for such a popular and lucrative genre of games.

William L.Hosch (2009) wrote an in-depth article discussing the genre of electronic-roleplaying games. The article briefly mentions non-electronic RPG's (role-playing games) like Dungeons and Dragons and how popular they are and how video games adopted this type of games and how it adapted it and how the genre has evolved over the many years. Citing many examples, it's an interesting article as it discusses the genre in depth and what makes it unique and is more of a broad look at the genre in general and not one specific topic.

In conclusion, these three genres are rather unique in the medium of video games and have many interesting ways of approaching stories, how to immerse the player and what they can bring to the table and how they have changed over many years. The articles cited give in-depth looks and show how popular the genres are, how lucrative they are and what they offer. These genres are forever changing and shows they will be around for years to come and will still be able to offer new and fun experiences and great stories too.

Introduction by Nate

Hello, I'm Nathan, a second-year student at ITB. I'm 20 years old and from Cavan. This blog post is about me and hobbies, aspirations etc. If you're reading this, then I'm surprised you want to go through such torture. First of all, I really enjoyed CDM year 1. It was a great experience and felt it was fun and got to meet great people and do interesting things. I still can't get over the fact I'm in college or I even made it to the second year. Thought I would've had a mental breakdown at this point When doing the semester last year, I really enjoyed Storytelling and narrative. I find it fascinating to sit down and talk about films, I'm a bit of a movie buff so I did enjoy breaking them down and even tell a story or two. Honestly my biggest accomplishment last semester was actually getting through to second year and hell, even surviving it knowing me. My goals for this module is to plan out and hopefully make a small film for our group project as its

Game Vision Statement

Megaman style gameplay link:  Link to image The genre of game I was thinking of doing was a retro style platformer in the same vein as Mario or Mega Man. What I mean by that is the game will be a side-scroller with enemies and possibly bosses at the end, finding collectables and use power-ups. The gameplay will take a healthy mix of Mario and Mega Man. The gameplay will take the style of attacking and powerups and consumables like Mega Man with the simplistic and casual fun Mario provides. It's challenging but not annoying or frustrating to the point of forcing the player to quit.
